West Cork Schools ‘SOUNDING ACROSS THE AIRWAVES’
West Cork Education Centre in collaboration with RTE launched a Junior Radio-Play Initiative in late 2010. The project was co-ordinated in schools by Victor Hayes, a facilitator with Radio and TV experience. Funding from the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland has allowed us to bring this Initiative to schools again this year.
This was an opportunity for schools to devise, record and air their own short Radio-Play on RTE Junior and tRTE, the station’s Childrens’ digital radio channels.
The Aims of the project are:
– To introduce children to the world of radio as a medium to entertain, engage and educate.
– To use the medium of radio to support primary school childrens’ learning across a range of curricular subjects, including English, Drama, SPHE and IT.
Children in senior classes explored the concepts of radio-drama, storyline structure and performance. The facilitator then led the children towards devising a storyline for their radio-plays, writing of the script, and finally recording and playing the final piece in the schools. Children across all ages and abilities had an opportunity to participate in this project.
The radio-plays were edited to an appropriate standard and in a format suitable for broadcast on RTE Junior.
RTE (through the office and personnel of the RTE Radio Digital Hub) provided a platform for airing the finished radio-plays and provided technical help where necessary and possible.
We acknowledge the funding received from the Broadcasting Commission. This was a wonderful opportunity for schools to devise, record and air their own short radio-plays and has been a very enjoyable experience for all.
